Department of Pathophysiology

Welcome to the Department of Pathophysiology

 

The department of Pathophysiology is one of the pioneer departments and was established in 2008 at Faculty of Health-Care Sciences, Eastern University, Sri Lanka. . The Department of Pathophysiology is consisting of disciplines of Pathology, Microbiology, Parasitology and Forensic medicine. We provide the knowledge on disease conditions, process or mechanism operating within organisms and the application of medical knowledge to the investigation of crime, particularly in establishing the causes of injury or death.

 

Discipline of  Pathology 

It provides knowledge regarding the causes and effects of diseases at tissue level by understanding the morphological and functional changes.

 

Discipline of Microbiology

It teaches the hidden world of organisms that causes infectious disease, thereby affects our health and influences our environment. It makes the knowledge of undergraduates to expand the vision beyond their eyes.

 

Discipline of  Parasitology

We involve in teaching students about common parasites to understand their medical importance. 

 

Discipline of Forensic medicine

This discipline helps the students to deal with the relation and application of legal facts to medical problems, behave under the law of professionalism and to understand the basis of injury, poisoning and death. 

 

Academic Schedule

Lectures and practical sessions are conducted by the department according to integrated body system based modular curriculum.

Third and fourth year medical students and first year nursing students (internal and external) are the learning groups coming under this department.

There are twenty two integrated modules for MBBS students which are taught in four semesters (semester 5 – 8).

At the end of each module an End Module Examination (EME) is held of which 20% contributes to the Phase II examination. 

Phase II examination is conducted in two parts. At the end of the 6th semester, Phase II Part-1 examination (end of 3rd year) and at the end of the 8th semester Phase II Part-2 examination.

Students those who have 80% attendance only will be eligible for the phase examination.

In near future Bachler of Public Health (BPH) also will be dealt by the Department of Pathophysiology
