Biography

Professor Markandu Thirukumar is a distinguished member of the Clinical Sciences Department within the Faculty of Health-Care Sciences at Eastern University, Sri Lanka. Born on January 10, 1970, in Urumbirai, he received his primary education at Chandrothaya Vidyalayam and completed his secondary education at Central College, Jaffna.

He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Jaffna with second-class honors. Following his undergraduate studies, he pursued postgraduate training both in Sri Lanka and New Zealand, earning MBBS and MD degrees from Sri Lanka.

In March 2015, he joined the Faculty as a senior lecturer-II and swiftly ascended to the position of Professor in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2020. Notably, he served on the Board of Management at PGIM for three years, starting in 2016. Additionally, he has been an active member of the Board of Study for Obstetrics and Gynaecology since 2018.

Professor Thirukumar's professional interests lie primarily in gynaecological malignancy and high-risk pregnancies. Currently, he holds the role of Academic Coordinator for Obstetrics and Gynaecology within the Clinical Sciences Department at the Faculty of Health-Care Sciences. Moreover, he serves as the Subject Coordinator for the ERPM Examination.
