Department of Medical Education & Research
Welcome to the Department of Medical Education & Research
The Medical Education and Research department was established in 2005. The initiative was taken by the former Chancellor of EUSL Prof. T. Varagunam who is a pioneer in medical education in Sri Lanka. The department is dedicated to providing assistance in medical education and research in the faculty.
The department works closely with the office of the Dean in curriculum development, implementation and evaluation of the study programmes. Also, the department convenes curriculum committee, research committee and ethical review committee.
The present MBBS and BSc.The nursing curriculum is outcome-based with the integration of disciplines, problem-based learning, early clinical exposure with provision for varied learning experiences to take place in the community and peripheral health facilities rather than restricting to the large teaching hospital. By organizing integrated modules and selecting study problems relevant to community needs and level of learning of students, education becomes relevant rather than memorising a massive amount of information that is usually forgotten.
The department also conducts interprofessional courses for both medical and nursing undergraduates like a module on Peace Medicine to promote peace through health and in addition other co-courses like IT and English are coordinated by the department.
